Salago is a family run independent store in the historic town of Totnes, Devon.
We offer thousands of product lines in the shop, from fashion and footwear to toys and games. As yet we only have a small selection on our website, though we are adding new lines every week. If you are looking for something in particular but do not see it on our website, please contact us because we may have it here in the shop.
Among other brands, we stock Shepherd sheepskin slippers and wool slippers by Haflinger and Wesenjak, bags, purses and accessories and eco fashion brand Thought (previously named Braintree). Our toy section includes brands such as Ostheimer, Holztiger, Bigjigs and John Crane. We are also stockists for Lyra Pencils and Stockmar art materials including watercolours, wax crayons and modelling beeswax.
Customer service - Customer satisfaction is very important to us and we are very keen to hear from our customers with feedback on the service they have received from us or with any comments about our website. We will also pass on any suggestions or recommendations to do with the items we stock to the relevant manufacturer.
Product range - We stock only quality products made predominantly of natural materials, such as leather, wool, sheepskin and wood. We try to source as many of our products as possible from Europe. Whenever possible we will state in which country the item is made. Our Totnes shop has a large variety of beautiful and unusual products from local craftsmen and artists.
Environmental policy - We use either recycled packaging or biodegradable plastic mailing bags which are made from 95% recycled plastic. These bags start the degrading process from when they are first exposed to UV light and should be degraded into water, carbon and a small amount of mineral within a few months. These bags are also designed to be used twice, so if you have anything to post, please re-use your mailing bag. We recycle as much of our office and packaging waste as possible.
Salago started trading as a retail store in June 1971, in premises on the High Street, Totnes, South Devon, England. The initial product range consisted of leather goods, sheepskins and Indian and Greek fashion clothing, in fact, Salago was one of the first retailers in the South West of England to specialise in Oriental clothing.
It was a risk starting a shop which stocked these unusual types of products, at a time when Totnes was still a fairly traditional market town with very conventional shops. In fact, other local retailers are known to have said "that shop will never last".
In 1983 Salago moved up the High Street to its current location, a much larger building with two floors. This extra space allowed for a dramatic expansion in the product range. The lower floor space was devoted to stocking a larger range of ladies fashions and accessories, footwear, leather goods and jewellery. The first floor became home to totally new product ranges, including toys, books, soft furnishings, games and many more. This expansion has led to Salago being one of the major retail stores in Totnes.
